About the County

Clinch County is in the southeastern part of Georgia. Initially, the area was part of Lowndes, Appling, and Ware Counties before the Georgia Legislature intervened in 1850. The intervention resulted in the formation of Clinch County, named for Duncan Lamont Clinch, a former war veteran. Years later, the county lost portions of its land to Atkinson, Coffee, Echols, and Lanier Counties.

The county’s first inhabitants were Oconee Indians. However, white settlers arrived and established small farms in the area, pushing away the Oconee Indians. By the 19th century, the main economic activity was timber production and the manufacture of timber products.

The county seat, Homerville, was first incorporated in 1869. This town attracted several sawmills in the area and played a crucial role in the turpentine industry’s success. Authorities built the first courthouse in the town in 1896, but it underwent a renovation to its current state.

In terms of population growth, the 2020 census results indicate that the county has 6,749 people, a 0.87% drop from 2010.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The primary purpose of the Sheriff’s Office is to provide a safe environment for the county residents while enforcing federal, state, and county laws. As the division’s head, the Sheriff cares for citizen affairs with the help of various officers. These staff members perform their duties through four divisions: Patrol, Criminal Investigations, jail, and K-9.

The Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is responsible for community patrol duties. The patrol officers spend most of their time in the streets interacting with the community members. They protect people’s lives and businesses and help establish a positive relationship between law enforcement and community members. The officers also deal with investigations relating to domestic violence.

Other notable duties include:

  • Traffic Control
  • Investigation of Traffic-Related Accidents

The Emergency Response Team

This team comprises specially trained officers who help deal with emergencies. For instance, the team collaborates with firefighters in dealing with fire outbreaks in Clinch County. Additionally, they assist in rescuing officers hurt and kidnapped after raids or ambushes. Other emergency situations include saving residents trapped after the collapse of buildings.

The K-9 Unit

The K-9 Unit is a special part of the Sheriff’s Office, comprising several canines. Each handler takes care of the K-9s per the regulations of the United States Police Canine Association, which also requires all counties to forward compliance certificates annually.

The purpose of the unit is to help flush offenders from their hideouts, including escapees from jail. Additionally, the canines help track the trail of narcotics and drug users. Other roles include providing emotional support to their handlers and protecting them from injury.

The Criminal Investigations Division

The Criminal Investigation Division looks into felony cases and misdemeanors beyond the Patrol Division’s purview. Some of these investigations revolve around murder, manslaughter, and rape. Other times, financial fraud may fall under the category, depending on the intensity of the particular offense. The division contracts help from other counties or the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for complex cases.

The Jail Division

The Clinch County Jail is a medium-security correctional facility located at 115 Court Square, Homerville, GA, 31634. Primarily, the jail houses individuals awaiting trial or sentencing in the county court. It also holds inmates serving medium-term sentences of one year or less.

County Inmate Search

The inmate search process in Clinch County can be a bit complex compared to other counties since there is no county-run inmate search website. Additionally, the jail doesn’t have an official website. The only available option is to conduct in-person searches by visiting the Sheriff’s Office. Usually, you’ll find a jail roster at the Department, and all you’ll have to do is review it.

You can also make inquiries via call at 912-487-5316. Ensure you have the inmate’s full name for easy information retrieval.

Inmate Search via the Department of Corrections

Usually, the Clinch County Jail acts as a preliminary facility. This means offenders spend only a short time before being transferred to state-run facilities. As a result, you may fail to locate an inmate’s name on the county jail roster but find it on the Georgia Department of Correction’s website.

The inmate search process entails choosing whether you’ll search by name, ID, or case number. The name option requires you to fill out the first and last names. However, if you are unaware of the full name, you can go for a separate search where you provide either the first or last name. Additionally, there is the partial search option where you key in the first few letters of a person’s name –for instance, “Jeff” instead of “Jefferson.”

The other two options, ID and case number are the most accurate. The numbers are unique to each inmate, meaning they’ll generate results relating to a particular offender.

The following inmate details will show after a successful search:

  • Offender Name
  • Major Offense
  • Facility of Incarceration
  • Physical Description
  • Possible Release Date
  • Parole Eligibility

Sex Offender Search

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has the primary authority over sex offender information in the state. The bureau maintains the data in a sex offender registry and requires certain registrants to comply with registration requirements after their release from custody. Authorities classify offenders who fail to comply with the requirements as absconders.

To conduct a sex offender search, follow this link to the sex offender registry and opt for the search option that best suits your interests.
