About the County

Clayton County is in north central Georgia and south of Atlanta. Initially, the area was part of Fayette and Henry Counties. However, the Georgia Legislature intervened in November 1858 by drafting a new Act directing the formation of Clayton from parts of the aforementioned counties. They named it for Augustin Smith Clayton, a child who came from Virginia to settle in the area.

The county seat is in Jonesboro, formally known as Leaksville. The renaming was to honor Colonel Samuel Goode Jones, a renowned civil engineer. His company improved the area’s railroads, tremendously improving the state’s economy by the late 1840s.

Today, the county’s infrastructure has had significant developments. For instance, Clayton County is home to the busiest airport, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It is also the state’s largest employer, with over 56,000 employees.

In terms of population growth, the 2020 census results show that the county has 297,595 people, a 17.7% increase from 2010. The report further indicates that the county covers 144 square miles.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Clayton County Sheriff’s office is at 9157 Tara Boulevard, Jonesboro, GA 30236. It is the county’s primary law enforcement authority under the leadership of a Sheriff. The office’s primary mission is to create a safe environment for county residents by responding to and eliminating crimes. To achieve this community protection goal, the Sheriff works with the help of other divisions and units, each having specific roles for efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery.

Uniform Patrol Division

The Uniform Patrol Division is the most visible section of the Sheriff’s Office. The Patrol Officers spend most of their time interacting with the county residents while protecting the streets and homes. A Lieutenant heads the division and operates with the help of Sergeants and Deputies.

Some of the specific responsibilities of Uniform Patrol include:

  • Performing Emergency Response Services. This duty falls solely under the Emergency Response Unit. The unit officers are a part of the Patrol Division with special training to handle emergencies like fire, bombs, and floods.
  • Responding to Distress Calls.
  • Retrieving Underwater Items through the Dive Team. Usually, suspects conceal evidence by throwing them into lakes.
  • Conducting Traffic Control Duties in the County. This role also involves investigating traffic accidents.
  • Improving the Relationship between Law Enforcement and the Community

The K-9 Unit

The K-9 Unit helps the Patrol Division and other Sheriff’s Office sections effectively perform their duties. It comprises several canines effective in detecting narcotics and aiding in the arrest of notorious violent offenders. Additionally, the K-9s provide emotional support to their handlers and protect them from injury during missions.

The Investigation Division

This is the Sheriff’s Division responsible for conducting criminal investigations beyond the Patrol Division’s expertise. The officers in the division have unique gear and equipment to help them analyze even the tiniest piece of evidence.

Lead investigators review incident reports during the investigation process and may follow up on the incident by contacting the victim. Other times, the investigators may go to the crime scene to better scrutinize the area.

Afterward, the officers forward the investigation report to the necessary authority for legal action: usually the Solicitor or the Court. Some of the felonies that this division handles include:

  • Murder
  • Manslaughter
  • Statutory Rape
  • Felonies involving Narcotics

County Inmate Search

The main correctional facility in Clayton County is the Clayton County Jail, located at 9157 Tara Boulevard, Jonesboro, GA 30236. It’s a medium security facility that houses male and female offenders serving medium-term sentences of one year or less. Individuals awaiting trial whose sentences surpass the one-year jail term are transferred to the Georgia Department of Correction’s custody.

You can search for inmates in the Clayton County Jail through the online jail roster on the Sheriff’s Office website. It allows you to look for inmates by name and booking date. When using the name search option, input the inmate’s last name. You can get finer results by adding the first name after the last name. The search will only display current inmates.

The booking date search option has three subcategories:

  • 48-Hour Docket Book
  • 14-Day Docket Book
  • 31-Day Docket Book

The above docket books illustrate the search timelines. For instance, the 48-hour docket allows you to search for inmates booked within 48 hours.

You may also visit the facility’s lobby and review the physical jail roster. Ensure you know the inmate’s full name for an accurate search process.

Inmate Search via the DOC’s Website

Sometimes, inmates may be transferred from the Clayton County Jail to the DOC’s custody without your consent. In such a case, you may find it hard to locate them. However, the Georgia Department of Corrections maintains an inmate search website. It contains information on offenders in state-run correctional facilities and the specific incarceration locations.

There are two broad search options: Name and ID/Case Number. The former option requires you to provide the inmate’s first and last name in full or their initials. However, a partial search gives broad results. Hence, inputting the first and last name in conjunction remains the best option.

The ID/Case Number search requires you to provide either of the two numbers. It is the most accurate search as each number identifies a particular offender.

Sex Offender Search

Information on sex offenders is under the management of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations. The bureau maintains a sex offender registry containing information on sex offenders prosecuted in the state and those moving in from other jurisdictions. Individuals interested in learning about sex offenders within their areas of residence can do so through this link
