About the County
The location of Clarke County is on the northeastern side of Georgia. Initially, the area was part of Jackson County until 1801, when the Georgia Legislature directed the formation of a new county. They named it for Elijah Clarke, a commander in the American Revolution.
Over the years, Clarke County’s territory changed, with the county acquiring and losing land on different occasions. For instance, in 1807, Clarke acquired parts of Greene County but lost them in 1811 and 1813 after the creation of Madison and Oglethorpe Counties, respectively. Further, it lost more land to Oconee County after its creation in 1875.
Throughout the county’s first two centuries, agriculture was the primary economic driver, with cotton being the primary agricultural output. However, after 1875, food crops became the immediate agricultural product. Eventually, the residents shifted the economy based on health and education.
In terms of population growth, the 2020 census results indicate that the county has 128,671 people, a 12% increase from 2010.

County Inmate Search
Learning about offenders’ whereabouts can be daunting, especially if you don’t know where to begin. Clarke County maintains an online website for this purpose in compliance with the Freedom of Information Act. The website contains a jail roster of incarcerated persons in the Clarke County Jail, and it’s divided into two: those arrested within seven days and all current inmates.
You’ll access the following offender information:
- Name
- Booking Date and Number
- Year of Birth
- Charges and Offense Type
- Bonding Company and Bond Amount
- Existing Warrants
The jail roster is also available at the Sheriff’s Office. All you have to do is visit the office in person or call 706-613-3250. If you go for the latter option, ensure you know the inmate’s full name for easy retrieval.
Inmate Search via the DOC’s Website
Facility transfers are common in America. Primarily, a change in a person’s security status is the main reason, although there are other factors like a court’s determination. Usually, if any of these cases occur, the inmate will end up in the custody of the state’s Department of Corrections: in this case, the Georgia Department of Corrections.
The Department maintains an online website via which interested individuals can conduct inmate searches. The following are the search options available:
- Name Search
- ID/Case Number Search
The Name Search option allows you to input the offender’s first and last name in conjunction or separately. You can also opt for a partial search where you use the first few letters instead of inputting the full name. For instance, if you’re looking for Jefferson, you can search it as “Jeff,” where the results list names matching the criteria. Hence, try as much as possible to write the name in full for narrow results.
The ID/Case Number Search option is the most accurate as each number identifies a particular individual. However, there are cases where inmates may have more than one case number, especially if they have faced past criminal charges.
