About the County
Cherokee County is on the northwestern side of Georgia and was part of the Cherokee Indian Territory. However, in December 1831, Georgia Legislature drafted an Act to guide the formation of Cherokee County from the territory after gold discovery in the area. A year later, the new county was further subdivided into ten new counties.
The county seat is in Canton, home to the county’s fourth Courthouse of 1929. Today, the old Courthouse houses the county administration offices, and the Frank C. Mills III Justice Center is the current Courthouse.
The Georgia Northeastern Railroad is responsible for freight services in Cherokee County utilizing the former L&N tracks. The same basic trend of population expansion has also been seen, with new suburbs in the south moving northward along the highway into exurbs.
As of 2020, the census results indicate that the county has 266,620 people, a 29.26% increase from 2010. The census report further shows that the county covers 434 square miles, with 422 of the area being land and the rest being water.
About the County Sheriff’s Office
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office’s mission is to maintain public trust and confidence through honest service, compassionate protection, and a secure community. The office’s head is the Sheriff, who operates with the help of over 455 staff members. These members work in divisions, each having specific responsibilities for efficiency and effectiveness in operation.
The Central Records
The purpose of this office is to store and maintain the county’s accident and incident reports. This office also handles the issuance of traffic tickets and delivers them to the appropriate court for adjudication. Individuals interested in the above records (incident and accident reports) can visit the division from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 5 pm. Notably, the issuance of the records is per the Georgia Open Records Act.
Before going to pick up a report, you can call the Central Records Division at 678-493-4140 with the following information for easy retrieval:
- Case Number
- Incident Occurrence Date
- Location of the Occurrence
You’ll pay $0.10 per page of incident reports and $5 per motor vehicle accident report.
Individuals interested in state background checks can also access the services through this division. All you have to do is fill out and sign a criminal history release form and pay $15.
The Uniform Patrol Division
Five police precincts spread out around the county make up the Uniform Patrol Division. There is a Lieutenant in charge of each police precinct, and they are primarily responsible for protecting and serving the inhabitants of their assigned region.
Some of the division’s specific responsibilities include:
- Patrolling the Streets during the Day and Night
- Traffic Control
- Responding and Solving Domestic Violence Cases
- Investigating Traffic Accidents
Criminal Investigations Department
Cherokee County’s Criminal Investigations Division aims to bring to justice those responsible for serious and minor crimes in Cherokee County. To achieve this goal, the department reviews incident reports, and the lead investigator may contact the crime victim for follow-up.
Upon the completion of an investigation, the officers refer felony cases to the Attorney’s Office for prosecution. On the other hand, misdemeanor prosecution occurs in the Solicitor’s Office and the State Court.
Crime victims may contact the Sheriff’s Office’s Victim Advocate Unit at 770-928-0239, day or night, for assistance. This unit continues to provide continuing aid and advocacy until the victim gets justice.
County Inmate Search
The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for corrections in Cherokee County. It runs the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center, which houses male and female offenders serving sentences of one year or less. Additionally, the jail holds individuals awaiting trial or sentencing in the County Circuit Court.
Like most counties, Cherokee County maintains an online jail roster through the Sheriff’s Office. The roster contains information on all current inmates in the county jail with information relating to their sentences. The website provides a name search option, where you can input the offender’s first and last name in conjunction or separately. Further, you can narrow the results by selecting the offender’s race and date of arrest, if known.
Some of these details include:
- Full Name
- Date of Birth
- Cell Block
- Arrest Date
- Reasons for Arrest
- Bond Amount
This roster is also available at the Sheriff’s Office. You just have to go in person or call (678) 493-4100 for assistance.
Inmate Search using the DOC’s Website
Inmate transfer from the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center to state-run facilities is common. For instance, a judge may render a judgment that requires individuals awaiting trial to serve sentences of more than one year. In such a case, the Detention Center will have to make arrangements for the offender’s transfer to the Georgia Department of Correction’s custody.
You can locate an offender through the DOC’s website, which provides two broad search options: Name and ID/Case Number. The latter option is the most accurate as each ID and case number identifies a particular offender. For the name search option, you can use the first and last name in conjunction or separately. However, using both of them is the better choice for narrow results.
A successful search will give the following details:
- Offender’s Name
- Facility of Incarceration
- Mugshots
- Physical Description
- Eligibility for Parole
- Possible Release Date
Information on the state’s sex offenders is accessible through the Georgia Sex Offender Registry.
