About the County  

The location of Chattooga County is in northwestern Georgia, bordering Alabama. Initially, the area that the county currently occupies was part of Walker and Floyd Counties. However, Georgia’s Legislature intervened by formulating an Act in December 1838 directing the formation of a new county from the aforementioned ones. The authorities named it for the Chattooga River, the smaller of the two rivers bearing the name.  

The first county inhabitants in the area were Creek Indians and Cherokees. These people coexisted harmoniously, engaging in various economic activities, including fur trade and hunting. By the 19th century, most county residents were farmers, with peaches being the most popular large-scale cash crop. However, the profitability of the peaches reduced, and by the 1920s, the residents shifted to strawberries. 

In terms of population growth, the 2020 census results indicate that the county has 24,965 people, a 4.8% drop from 2010. The report further shows that the county covers 314 square miles, 313 of it being the land area, and the rest is the area covered by water.  

About the County Sheriff’s Office 

The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office is located at 35 W Washington Street, Summerville, GA 30747. It is the county’s primary law enforcement authority under the leadership of the Sheriff, who performs through various certain divisions within the department, including: 

The Patrol Division  

The Patrol Division is the Sheriff’s Office’s most visible division. The officers are uniformed and are always on duty 24 hours a day throughout the week, protecting the community. The following officers make up the division: 

• Lieutenant  
• Sergeants  
• Deputies  

Some of the specific responsibilities include: 

• Responding to Domestic Violence Calls  
• Investigating Traffic Accidents in the County  
• Traffic Control Duties

Investigation Division  

The Criminal Investigation Division takes over cases that are too complex for the Patrol Division to handle. Primarily, felonies are the most investigated ones, including:

• Statutory Rape  
• Child Pornography  
• Transaction Fraud  

The division also has a drug unit that looks into cases involving drug use in the county.  

School Resource Division  

The School Resources Officers are stationed at every school in the county. These officers do more than offer security and protection; they also foster positive relationships with the students, faculty, staff, and families. The officers’ goal is to serve as trustworthy examples to the students, consequently teaching them to confide in any member of the school’s law enforcement staff in an emergency.  

Court Services Division  

The Chattooga County court services department provides all court services, including courtroom and courthouse order maintenance. Additionally, the deputies organize the transportation of offenders from the county jail to the court, including those with proceedings in other counties. The officers may also help courtroom staff in preparations involving court hearings.  

The Jail Division  

The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office runs and maintains the County Jail System by undertaking intake and detention activities. The Chattooga County Jail and Detention Center is the main jail in the county that houses male and female offenders, including those awaiting trial and sentencing. The minimum security facility has about 160 beds with a daily intake of 34 inmates.  

County Inmate Search 

The inmate search process involves locating the whereabouts of incarcerated loved ones. The Freedom of Information Act classifies inmate data under public records. As such, departments and agencies must ensure the records are easily accessible to the public.  

The Sheriff’s Office maintains a jail inmate roster containing information on incarcerated persons within the county. However, juvenile data is an exception as Georgia statutes classify such information as confidential, and only certain people can access it.

Alternatively, you can utilize the county’s online jail roster that provides three broad search categories: Current Inmates, Booking over Last 24 Hours, and Booking Date. The three broad categories allow you to search using the inmate’s first and last name, in conjunction or separately.  

Inmate Search via the Sex Offender Registry  

Every state maintains a sex offender registry containing information on registered and violent sex offenders and predators. The Georgia Sex Offender Registry allows you to learn about the whereabouts of sex offenders in the community, allowing you to stay and keep your children safe. The website also contains information on absconders, including their mugshots.

Search via the DOC’s Website  

Sometimes, offenders may be transferred from Chattooga County correctional facilities to state-run prisons. Primarily, a change in an offender’s security status is why it happens, although a judge’s ruling on a case may play a part.
