About the County
Charlton County is located in the southeastern part of Georgia and has its county seat in Folkston. Initially, Charlton County was part of Camden and Ware Counties before the Georgia General Legislature intervened in 1854 by formulating an Act directing the formation of a new county. Afterward, authorities named Charlton County after former U.S. Senator Robert Charlton, who was also one of the prominent state jurists.
Most of the first inhabitants arrived from Center Village, which is not too far away. These new residents established farms, homes, and stores around the train station. As the population grew, it became clear that the city needed a better name than “the station.” As a result, authorities adopted the name Folkston after Dr. William B. Folks of Waycross, Georgia.
In terms of population growth, the 2020 census results indicate that the county has 12,518 people, a 3.4% increase from 2010.
About the County Sheriff’s Office
The Charlton County Sheriff’s Office’s official purpose is to ensure the safety of all residents, reduce the incidence of crime, and safeguard the community as a whole. During these operations, the Sheriff must ensure the department complies with the county, state, and country laws and ordinances.
The legal term for the Sheriff is four years, after which the county holds an election to vote for a new Sheriff or retain the current one. Below are some of the programs and divisions that assist the office in achieving the community protection goal:
The Community Emergency Response Team
Charlton County, through the Sheriff’s Office, sponsors the Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) Program. The program’s goal is to help residents with how to respond in the event of a crisis at their homes, places of business, and neighborhoods.
Some of the emergencies the program helps you deal with include natural catastrophes like floods and earthquakes. With the training, you can take the necessary steps to reduce the impacts of the aforementioned catastrophes.
Individuals interested in the program can register by calling the Emergency Management Office at 912-496-1081 or by sending an email.
Fingerprinting Services
The Charlton County Sheriff’s Office offers fingerprinting services to individuals seeking various licenses, certificates, or jobs. Interested individuals should visit the Sheriff’s Office at 1548 Third Street, Folkston, Georgia, 31537, and present an acceptable photo identification document such as a state-issued I.D.
Usually, the office is open from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 4 pm except for public holidays. Additionally, you’ll pay a small processing fee depending on the number of fingerprint cards you request.
D.N.A. Services
Like fingerprinting services, individuals interested in court-ordered D.N.A. services must present valid photo identification documents, primarily state-issued I.D.s or passports. These services occur at the Sheriff’s Office from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 4 pm.
The Patrol Division
The Patrol Division is a diverse part of the Sheriff’s Department and comprises Deputies, Lieutenants, and a Captain. Officers from this division are the most visible because they interact more with the community members when patrolling the streets. Apart from the patrol responsibilities, the Deputies enforce traffic laws and undertake traffic control duties.
Other responsibilities include:
- Responding to Emergency and Distress Calls
- Arrest and Presenting Non-Compliant Individuals before the Court
- Investigating Road Accidents
- Inmate Transportation to the Court from the County Jail and Back
County Inmate Search
Ease of access to inmate records by the public is a legal requirement in the United States. Primarily, the enactment of the Freedom of Information Act in 1966 was the starting point as it required government agencies and departments to ease the access process.
Most correctional facilities have cooperated with this directive by establishing online websites to aid inmate searches. However, despite lacking such a website, Charlton County maintains a jail roster containing information on inmates in the County Jail. All you have to do is visit the Sheriff’s Office with the incarcerated loved one’s full name.
The jail inmate roster contains the following offender information:
- Name
- Arrest Date
- Reason for Arrest
- Bond Amount
- Potential Release Date
- Incarceration Status
Online Inmate Search
There are two ways you can utilize online platforms to locate an inmate in Charlton County:
- Through the DOC’s Website
- Using the Sex Offender Registry
Inmate Search through the DOC’s Website
Sometimes, an inmate previously incarcerated in the Charlton County Jail may be transferred to state-run facilities for several reasons, including:
- Change of an Inmate’s Security Status. The Sheriff must be in a position to convince the court that the County Jail cannot meet the inmate’s security needs.
- After a Court Renders a Verdict. This scenario is common for inmates awaiting trial or sentencing at the County Jail.
In any of the abovementioned cases, the Georgia Department of Corrections is the best place to conduct an inmate search. The following are the search options available:
- Search by Name or Description
- Search by I.D. or Case Number
The name search option allows you to provide the inmate’s first and last name separately or in conjunction. Using both names will give you better and narrower results. There is also the option to indicate the inmate’s possible age, which helps get closer to a particular inmate.
The ID/case number search option is the most accurate as each number is unique to a specific offender. However, a prisoner may have more than one case number, especially if the name has previously faced criminal charges.
Inmate Search through the Sex Offender Registry
The Georgia Sex Offender Registry contains information on registered sex offenders in the state. Most inmate information remains on the website even after release, allowing the public to know their whereabouts.
The website is under the management of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations and contains the following search options:
- Name Search
- Search by County and City
- Zip Code Search
- Radius from the Zip Address
Nationwide Inmate Records Online Check
Jail records, court & arrest records, mugshots and even judicial reports
