About the County

Candler County is in the southeastern part of Georgia and has its county seat in Metter. The name ‘Candler’ is derived from Allen Daniel Candler, a former Governor who lived from 1834 to 1910. County authorities undertook the naming exercise to honor him for his work in collating and editing volumes of the state’s historical records.

Initially, the area now known as Candler County was part of Emanuel and Montgomery Counties. In 1914, consultations between various parties led to the drafting of an Act by Georgia’s legislature, which directed the county’s formation. However, the hostility and opposition from the surrounding counties made this move difficult, but the growth of Metter town and the cooperation of the town residents was the cutting edge.

Currently, the county has over 10,981, according to the 2020 census results, a 0.19% decrease from 2010. The United States Census Bureau further indicates that the county covers 249 square miles, 243 of the area being land and the rest water.

About the County Sheriff’s Office

The Candler County Sheriff’s Office is located at 1015 E. Hiawatha Street, Metter, GA 30439 and is under the leadership of a Sheriff who is the county’s overall law enforcement authority. The department’s primary mission is to deliver effective law enforcement services while upholding the highest ethical standards possible. To this end, the agency employs impartial law enforcement that considers constitutional protections for all citizens and the limits placed on police power by statute and the courts.

Several divisions assist the Sheriff in achieving the goal of community protection, including:

The Patrol Division

This division consists of Uniformed Patrol Officers under the management and supervision of a Patrol Captain. These officers are the most visible in the community as they offer 24-hour citizen protection by spending time on the streets to prevent crimes. Other Patrol Division’s roles include:

  • Offering Emergency Response Services. These services include evacuation activities from fire incidents.
  • Traffic Control and Elimination of Hazards
  • Conducting Investigation on Road Accidents
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Improving Ties between the Community and Law Enforcement

Criminal Investigations Division

The Criminal Investigations Division comprises specially trained officers under the management and supervision of an Investigations Captain. The division’s primary purpose is to investigate serious crimes in the county, including:

  • Murder
  • Sex Assault
  • Child Pornography
  • Statutory Rape

The officers have access to cutting-edge technology and gear to assist them in investigating and resolving the abovementioned crimes. In addition, they participate in ongoing training and retraining programs to sharpen their skills.

Candler County Emergency Management Agency

The agency aims to coordinate the county’s reaction to catastrophes, including designing ways to prepare, mitigate, respond, and recover from the disasters, to address the full range of emergency demands, emergency management necessitates the establishment of plans, structures, and procedures. These activities complement the government efforts of emergency response.

The Jail Division

The Candler County Jail is located at 1015 E. Hiawatha Street, Metter, Georgia. It’s the county’s primary correctional facility that houses inmates awaiting trial or sentencing and those serving jail terms of a few months. Currently, the Candler County Jail has an inmate capacity of 75 with a daily average of 65. Other times, the facility may house highly intoxicated persons before their transfer to a detoxification center within the county. In addition, the jail is the Sheriff’s Office dispatch center that you can reach at 912-685-2568.

County Inmate Search

The Freedom of Information Act intervened on the matter of public access to inmate records by classifying offender information under public records. As a result, correctional facilities had to design ways the public could easily access inmate data, with most providing online websites for these purposes.

However, Candler County lacks a centralized access website, but it maintains a jail roster at the County Sheriff’s Office. The roster allows individuals to learn about the whereabouts of their incarcerated loved ones in the Candler County Jail. All you have to do is visit the Sheriff’s Office with the full names of the offender and, if possible, the booking number. The following information will be available on the jail roster:

  • Name, Age, Sex, and Height of the Offender
  • Date of Arrest
  • Offense Committed
  • Incarceration Date
  • Possible Release Date
  • Mugshots

The Sheriff’s Office is open for these purposes from Monday through Friday between 8 am and 4 pm.

Alternatively, you can contact the jail by calling 912-685-2291 and requesting the offender’s information. Ensure you provide the full inmate’s name for accuracy.

Inmate Search after Transfer to the DOC’s Custody

Sometimes, the Candler County Sheriff may recommend the transfer of an inmate from the Candler County Jail to state-run correctional facilities. There are several reasons why this scenario might happen, including:

  • In the Event of Change in an Inmate’s Security Status. This happens when a prisoner becomes impossible to handle at the county jail.
  • After a Judge Sentences an Inmate who was Previously Awaiting Trial

In the case of the abovementioned scenarios, the best way to learn about an offender’s whereabouts is through Georgia’s Department of Corrections. It contains information on inmates in state-run correctional facilities and maintains an online website for easy access.

The Search Process

The following are the search options on the website:

  • Search by Name
  • Search by ID or Case Number

The Search by Name option requires you to provide the last and first names of the offender in conjunction or separately. However, if you want better results, combine both names and indicate the inmate’s possible age. Doing so will help narrow the names to a few inmates.

The Search by ID or Case Number is the most accurate option as it identifies a particular inmate or case. However, there are times when an offender may have more than one case number, especially if they have been charged with other crimes.
