Camden County is a county in the southernmost part of the United States state of Georgia’s coast. The Georgia Constitution created Camden County on February 5, 1777, to become the state’s 8th original County. This County combined St. Thomas and St. Mary colonial parishes along with the lands surrendered by Creek Indians. The state legislature incorporated land from Camden County in 1854 to create Charlton County. Camden County is named in honor of Charles Pratt, the earl of Camden, Lord Chancellor and Chief Justice of England. It comprises St. Marys, GA, Micropolitan Statistical Area, included in the Jacksonville-St. Marys-Palatka, FL-GA Combined Statistical Area.

As of the 2020 census, the County had a population of 54768. Camden County has a total area of 782 square miles comprising 613 square miles of land and 169 square miles of water. The county seat and the largest city is Woodbine. The central administration office is at 200 E 4th Street, P.O. Box 99, Woodbine, GA 31569.

Camden County Sheriff’s Office

The Camden County Sheriff’s Office is the principal law enforcement agency in Camden County. This is a constitutional office responsible to the residents of the County and not the County government. Typically, voters elect the Sheriff to the office every four years. The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for managing Camden County jails and inmates. It is tasked with promoting public peace and safety through public policing. Additionally, this Office patrols the incorporated and unincorporated areas of the County, usually those not within the local Police Department’s jurisdiction. The Sheriff’s Office manages local court orders and judgments such as repossessions, subpoenas, tax delinquencies, and foreclosures.

Camden County’s Sheriff’s Office dates back to at least 1787. Each of the counties in the state has an elected Sheriff directly responsible to the residents of that County. Georgia Sheriffs usually have years of educational and law enforcement experience. Typically, they are highly-trained law enforcement officers with particular constitutionally mandated responsibilities, such as:

  • Law Enforcement: Enforcement of the criminal laws
  • Court Duties: The Sheriff maintains the safety and security of the court, serves court papers, and performs other court-related duties
  • Jail Administration: The Sheriff’s Office operates the county jail and is solely responsible for the custody, safety, and health of offenders

Sheriff Jim Proctor

Sheriff Jim Proctor is the current Sheriff of Camden County, elected to office on November 6, 2012. Notably, Sheriff Proctor received the Georgia Sherriff’s Association Certification from the Sheriff-Elect Academy on December 14, the same year. He began his law enforcement career in 1988 as a Corrections Officer for Camden County Sheriff’s Office. Before he was appointed Sheriff, Proctor served as a Police Officer for Brunswick Police Department.
