Burke County is situated along the eastern border of the United States state of Georgia. It is one of the eight original counties in this state and shares the border with South Carolina along the Savannah River. This County is part of the Augusta-Richmond County, GA-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area, and the county seat is Waynesboro. When the colony was created in 1732, the current Burke County was known as the Halifax District. Later in 1758, Georgia was dived into parishes where the Halifax District became the parish of St. George. Portions of this County were subsequently incorporated into Richmond, Jefferson, Jenkins, and Screven Counties.

The St. George Parish became one of the state’s first counties in 1777, named after Edmund Burke, a political philosopher and member of the British Parliament. The County population was 24596 as of the 2020 census. It has a total area of 835 square miles with 827 square miles of land and 8 square miles of water.

Burke County Sheriff’s Office

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office is the principal law enforcement agency of Burke County. It is a diverse organization of professional men and women committed to protecting the property and lives of the residents they serve. This Office serves over 23000 residents and hundreds of individuals who work in Burke County daily.

The professionals in this Office are responsible for patrolling this second-largest county 24 hours every day, all week. The Sheriff’s Office investigates crimes, apprehends criminal offenders, and offers custody or control for arrested defendants (pre-trial or sentenced). It is responsible for servicing civil processes, courtroom security, criminal papers, and transporting prisoners and offenders with mental health conditions.

The Sheriff’s Office aims to establish close relationships with the Burke County community through Community Policing programs and provide the deputies with staffing. The Office is involved in pertinent programs within the County, such as CHAMPS ((Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety), which educates the children in schools regarding the dangers of using illegal drugs and the importance of staying safe and making the right choices. Additionally, the Office aims to offer driver safety education, manage neighborhood watch associations, and speak at community town hall meetings, schools, and business luncheons.

Sheriff Alonzo Williams is the current Sheriff of Burke County. He works diligently to make the community safe and to offer a friendly environment for the Office employees.

State Certification

The County Sheriff’s Office is currently an officially accredited Sheriff’s Office by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police. The Office has been working towards accomplishing the State Law Enforcement Certification for the last two years. It is essential to note that Certification is a progressive and time-proven way of assisting law enforcement agencies in calculating and improving their overall performance.

To achieve this, the Sheriff’s Office must show proficiency in the 129 state law enforcement standards.

Burke County Jail

The Burke County Detention Center is under the Sheriff’s Office’s Detention Services Division. This Division is also responsible for supervising inmate work crews and inmate transportation. The County Detention Center detains all arrested offenders from all of Burke County. This jail was renamed in January 2017 and houses detainees convicted of misdemeanor or felony offenses.

Burke County Inmate Search

Burke County inmate records are a compilation of personal and official data on inmates held in correctional facilities within Burke County. Typically, inmate records offer general information regarding the incarcerated individual, including full name, date of birth, address, registration number, age, sex, race, nationality, and other non-confidential biodata. Additionally, these records comprise sentencing information, current charges, mugshots, criminal history, booking date and time, class and type of offense, the county where the case was tried, and the location of the facility holding the offender. Per the Georgia Open Records Act, public members and interested parties can obtain and inspect these records upon request. It is also vital to note that some records, such as files on juveniles, remain confidential.

You can request to inspect or obtain Burke County inmate records from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office since it is the principal custodian. However, some municipals can get them from the designated Police Departments.

Finding an incarcerated loved one is easy if you know where to start and how to conduct it. Typically, inmate searches vary depending on the type of correctional facility holding the inmate. For instance, county jails usually have an inmate roster on the Sheriff’s Office, while state prisons offer an inmate search tool on the DOC’s site. Alternatively, the public can access inmate information through third-party agencies offering nationwide or statewide search tools. These are relatively easier to navigate; however, they may not constitute accurate and current offender data.

County Jail Inmate Inquiry

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office offers access to current offender information as a service to the general public. It makes every effort to keep the information provided through the “Online Inmate Inquiry” application up-to-date and accurate. To search for an offender, you need to click “Agree and Continue,” meaning that you have read and understood the Disclaimer and agree with the conditions. This leads you to the “Current Inmates” inmate roster containing essential information on the inmate, such as full name, sex, status, weight, height, address, arrest date, days in jail, total bond, charges, warrant number, statute, description, and court.

 State Prison Inmate Search

If your loved one is placed in state prison after trial, their custody officially falls under the Georgia Department of Corrections. Therefore, to search for an inmate, visit the GDC’s official site and click “Offender Search” on the page.
