Brooks County is a county in the southwest part of the United States state of Georgia. According to the 2020 census, this area had a population of 16301. It is located just west of Valdosta on its southern border with Florida. This County was established by an act of the Georgia General Assembly in 1858 from parts of Thomas and Lowndes Counties. It was named for Preston S. Brooks from South Carolina, a famous legislator known for his intensely southern remarks, sentiments, and ardent defense of slavery. On May 22, 1856, Brooks violently assaulted Charles Summer, using a cane to deliver a speech against slavery.

Brooks County has a total area of 498 square miles comprising 493 square miles of land and 4.8 square miles of water. The largest town in this County is Quitman, which also doubles up as the county seat. The first courthouse opened in 1859 and was then a small temporary culture.
