Berrien County is a county situated in the southwest portion of the United States state of Georgia. According to the 2020 US census, the population of this County is 18160, displaying a slight decrease from the 19826 of 2010. Nashville is the county seat. On February 25, 1856, an act of the Georgia General Assembly created Berrien County from portions of Coffee, Irwin, and Lowndes Counties. It is the 116th County of the state and was named for John Macpherson Berrien, a Savannah lawyer who served as a state senator, US senator, judge, and attorney general. Berrien was also the first president of the Georgia Historical Society.
Berrien County has a total area of 458 square miles comprising 452 square miles of land and 6 square miles of water. Four buildings in this area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Old Berrien County Jail, the Alapaha Colored School, the William G. Harrison/Eulalie Taylor House, and the courthouse.
Berrien County Sheriff’s Office
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office is located at 500 County Farm Rd, Nashville, GA 31639, and operates from Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. This Office serves the Berrien County community of more than 20000 residents across the 500 square miles of the County’s magnificent geography. It is a full-service law enforcement agency operating out of an Adult Detention Center and a Law Enforcement Justice Center. The agency comprises more than 50 brave men and women who work diligently to provide the safest environment for the Berrien County community it serves. Above all, it shall remember its sworn oath to protect the constitutional rights of all the residents while working together in enforcing the state laws while being compassionate to the needs of the citizens.
Sheriff Paulk
Ray Paulk is the current Sheriff in Berrien County, Georgia. He was born in this County and has lived and served here his entire life. Sheriff Paulk began his career at the Sheriff’s Office in 1994, serving as a dispatcher or jailer under the then Sheriff Jerry Brogdon. He graduated from Abraham Baldwin Police Academy and was assigned to the road patrol in September 1995. In this position, he handled many tasks as those of Deputy Sheriffs. In 2007, Paulk rose to the rank of a Captain, where he took on more administrative roles essential for the daily operations of the Sheriff’s Office. Three years later, he advanced to the rank of a Major, where he continued serving as Chief Deputy.
Now serving as Sheriff, he plans to continue providing Berrien County citizens with the best possible service and protection while upholding the Constitution and enforcing Georgia Law. Sheriff Paulk has demonstrated excellent leadership qualities while maintaining the $3.6 million budget. Additionally, he is committed to his open-door policy for all citizens.
Berrien County Jail
