Baldwin County is located in the central portion of the United States state of Georgia. The population here was 46337 as of the 2010 census. Its county seat is Milledgeville, developed along the Oconee River. The County is part of the Milledgeville, GA, Micropolitan Statistical Area. Its main office is at 1601 N., Columbia Street Suite 230, Milledgeville, Georgia 31061. According to the US Census Bureau, this County has a total area of 267 square miles comprising 258 square miles of land and 9.6 square miles of water.  

The County was established in 1803 on lands once held by Creek Indians. It was named for Abraham Baldwin, a member of the Continental Congress and the author of legislation that established the USA’s first charter for a state-supported university, the University of Georgia. On the other hand, its county seat was named after John Milledge, a Congress member, Revolutionary leader, and Governor.  

Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office 

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office is a professional law enforcement organization that prides itself on delivering the highest quality service possible to the more than 40000 residents of Baldwin County. It is a full-service law enforcement agency operating the jail, uniform patrol, the 911 Center, and the court. This agency comprises 146 dedicated employees that continually strive to provide the citizens with professional and courteous law enforcement services. Being a state-certified agency, the Sheriff’s Office does its best to recruit, train, and retain the most qualified candidates. It believes that community involvement is the key to success and continues to seek opportunities to work closely with the residents of Baldwin County, Georgia.

Sheriff Bill Massee 

Bill Massee was born on October 9, 1946, in Milledgeville, Georgia, and schooled in the Baldwin County public schools. He graduated from Baldwin High School in 1964 and received an Associate’s Degree from the Georgia Military College. The Sheriff, later in 1970, received a BBA from Georgia College and State University. His law enforcement career began in 1971 when he worked at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for the following six years. He became the Chief of Police Milledgeville Police Department from 1985 to 1988. Sheriff Bill Massee is serving his 8th term as the Baldwin County Sheriff, elected in 1988 and took office on January 1, 1989.  

Sheriff Massee has had outstanding appointments and elections over recent years. He has previously served as the President of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association and the Constitutional Officers Association of Georgia. Massee has also served as a board member of the Georgia Board of Corrections.  

Baldwin County Jail 

The Baldwin County Jail is a correctional facility located at 119 Old Monticello Road, Milledgeville, GA, 31061. This jail is a medium to maximum security facility serving Baldwin County, Georgia communities. It primarily holds offenders awaiting trial or those serving short sentences, particularly a year or less. Although the Sheriff’s Office runs the Baldwin County Jail, the facility is under the County Jail Administrator alongside the Assistant Jail Administrator.
