Bacon County is a county in the southeast of the United States state of Georgia. Alma is the county seat. This area had a population of 11096 as of the 2010 census. Bacon County was named after the United States senator Augustus Octavius Bacon, who served four terms and became the Senate’s president pro tempore in 1912. It was established in 1914 from portions of Pierce, Appling, and Ware Counties. Since Bacon County was the 151st county of Georgia, the state required an amendment to override an initial limit of 145 counties set by state voters in 1904.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Bacon County comprises a total area of 286 square miles, including 259 square miles of land and 27 square miles of water. The Bacon County Sheriff’s Office is a law enforcement agency responsible for promoting public safety in all of Bacon County. An act of the Legislature created the Office approved on July 27, 1914, along with the County. The first Sheriff of Bacon County was James W. Googe, elected by the voters in the November 20, 1914 election. He had six opponents and won this election by 242 votes. James’s closest opponent was Chester H. Bennett receiving 221 votes.

Sheriff Andy Batten is the current Sheriff of Bacon County. He was born and raised in Bacon County. Before taking his Oath of Sheriff in January 2021, Sheriff Batten had worked for the Bacon County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years. Andy Batten served as a Jailer from January of 2000, where he worked until his promotion to a road deputy position. He worked in all aspects of the Sheriff’s Office and was in charge of numerous youth programs.
During his reign as a Deputy, he received several advanced certifications, such as the general law enforcement instructor. Having worked his way up the ladder, Sheriff Batten developed the skills and experience of an effective leader. He has passionate about serving and helping others. He looks forward to leading the Office in a productive and positive direction to create a Sheriff’s Office that all residents can be proud of.
