Atkinson County is in the southeastern part of the United States state of Georgia. Its county seat is Pearson. The state legislature created this County in 1997 from parts of Coffee and Clinch counties. This area was notably named for William Y. Atkinson, governor of Georgia and speaker of the state House of Representatives in the late 1890s. It is essential to note that this area in 2003 had the highest illiteracy rate of any United States county at 36%. The population of this County was 8375 as of the 2010 census.  

Atkinson County is the state’s 153rd, covering about 345 square miles, comprising 338 square miles as land and 5.2 square miles as water. The majority of this County is situated in the Satilla River sub-basin of the St. Marys-Satilla River basin. A small southeastern corner is in the Upper Suwannee River sub-basin of the Suwannee River basin. 

Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office 

The Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for serving the citizens of Atkinson County by efficiently and professionally maintaining peace, protecting the property, protecting life, and providing service to the community per the Constitution of the United States of America and the State of Georgia and . Primarily, the duties of the Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office include operating the Atkinson County Jail and providing professional law enforcement. Additionally, this Office serves as an officer of the courts to provide security and safety and serve criminal warrants, civil processes, and subpoenas.  

It provides professional law enforcement response and presence for the safety and security of this County. It is essential to note that the Office achieves this by recruiting and training the best and brightest employees.  

The Office primarily maintains the Sex Offender Registry of Atkinson County, Georgia. It ensures all sex offenders are properly registered and information is accurately reported to the Georgia Crime Information Center. This role also ensures the completion of quarterly verifications and the prosecution of non-compliant offenders. Another function of this agency is the safe and timely transporting of offenders and mental health patients to various correctional facilities and institutions throughout Georgia. For this, the agency offers proper training and equipment for inmate transport. It ensures the fleet is safe and has prepared conditions for this function.  

The Atkinson County Sheriff’s Office currently offers court security for The Juvenile Court, The Magistrate Court, and The Superior Court. It serves numerous civil processes and criminal warrants each year. Typically, the Deputies are in charge of inmate transfers to the Department of Corrections and Mental Health Transports to various locations within the state.
