Appling County is a county in the southeastern part of the United States state of Georgia. This County, located in the south of Altamaha River, was established by an act of the state legislature in December 1818. The area where this County sits came from the territory handed over by the Creek Indians to the states in 1818, the Treaty of the Creek Agency, and the 1814 Treaty of Fort Jackson. It was named after Colonel Daniel Appling of Columbia County, a famous hero of the War of 1812-1815. The county seat is Baxley.  

The County’s population was 18444 as of the 2020 census. Appling County comprises a total area of 512 square miles, including 507 square miles of land and 5.2 square miles of water. This is an area where hometown friendliness shines through a spectacular setting. One can enjoy an outdoor adventure with the Moody Forest Natural Area, Altamaha River, Dunn’s Lake, and Lake Mayers.  

Appling County Sheriff’s Office 

The Appling County Sheriff’s Office is the chief law enforcement agency in Appling County. The current law enforcement center is located at 560 Barnes Street, Baxley, Georgia, 31513, and began operating on December 6, 2020. The Office Complex has a total space area of 24000 square feet. It is essential to note that the total cost of constructing this Complex was $3.6 million, paid entirely by SPLOST FUNDS. The Sheriff’s Office promotes public safety in Appling County through public policing and managing the county jails alongside its offenders.  

This Office is primarily responsible for patrolling any unincorporated areas of Appling County or areas not covered by the municipal police force. Additionally, it enforces legal judgments, including foreclosures, tax delinquencies, and repossessions.  

About Sheriff Mark Melton 

Mark Melton became the Sheriff of Appling County, Georgia, after the election in May of 2016. He later took Office on January 1, 2017. Melton was born and raised in Lakeland, Georgia, and has lived in Appling County for over 30 years. He graduated from Valdosta State University with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1985. Sheriff Mark Melton commenced his law enforcement career as the State Probation Officer with the Department of Corrections. Melton also served as a manager for Baxley’s Appling and Jeff Davis offices. He was later promoted to Compliance or Training Coordinator assigned to the Southeast Regional Office in Waycross. 

From 2006 until the Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Melton served as the Investigator for the Brunswick Circuit District Attorney, assigned to Jeff Davis, Wayne, and Appling Counties. He has continued his education and attended several training programs throughout his career.  

Appling County Detention Center 

Appling County Detention Center is a medium security jail located at 560 Barnes St STE B, Baxley, GA 31513, United States. It currently has an inmate bed capacity of 86. This full-service correctional facility usually houses offenders awaiting trial or those sentenced for a short term, generally less than a year. This adult facility houses offenders from all of Appling County, Georgia. It flaunts about 2487 inmate bookings every year.  

The Sheriff’s Office operates and manages the Appling County Detention Center.

Remember, the law prohibits jails from publicizing juvenile information; therefore, you will not find a juvenile inmate on the inmate list.
