The City of Springfield’s elected officials are comprised of private citizens from all walks of life. Not only are they residents of our city, but they are also willing public servants who take very seriously their roles as representatives of our community. The City Council normally meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. Take a moment to meet the members of our City Council.


 

Mayor

Barton A. Alderman

Justin Cribbs

Number of Years as area resident: Lifetime resident of Effingham County; Springfield resident since 2005 

Why I chose Springfield as my home: My wife, Greta, has deep roots in Springfield. We live in the house that was built for her great-grandmother and in which her great-aunts and grandmother also lived for many years. I love the small hometown feel of Springfield and believe it is a great place to raise my children. 

My Council Goals: Work together will fellow Council Members, the Mayor, the City Manager, and other city officials and employees to do the following: 

·    Continue downtown revitalization efforts using the Mars Theatre as the cornerstone for future development of new business. 

·    Develop new walking/biking trails and improve existing recreation areas. 

·    Continue the beautification of downtown through the upcoming phases of the streetscape project. 

·    Modernize our city infrastructure including city buildings, lift stations, and our wastewater treatment plant. 

·    Support the Springfield Police and Fire Departments and help to ensure that we have modern equipment and well trained officers and firefighters. 

Professional Information:  I have worked as a chemist since 1999 and am currently employed at Johnson Matthey in Pooler. I graduated in 1999 from AASU with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. I graduated from Effingham County High School in 1994. 

Personal Information: I am married to Greta (Middleton) and have two daughters, Molly and Mary. I am a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Jerry Maennche

Years as Area Resident: 27 Years

 

Why I Chose Springfield as My Home: 

I am from a small town in Arizona called Snow Flake. It is about the size of Springfield. After serving a little over 22 years in the military and having a wife who is from Glennville, GA we ended up in Springfield. We liked it so much we decided to stay.

 

Professional Information:  I am retired from the Military and also Industrial peanut operations retired.

My Council Goals: To work with the City Manager, Mayor, fellow Council Members and the great people of Springfield to continue to improve the Downtown upgrade and to listen to any concerns the citizens of Springfield have that they believe will make things even better.

 

Personal: Married to Joyce Branch Maennche for 44 years. We belong to the 1st Baptist Church of Springfield.

Family:

3 Children: Julie Cleland, Arizona, Kerry Maennche and Melissa Lewis, Clyo GA.

8 Grandchildren - 4 in Arizona, 4 in Georgia

3 Great Grandchildren - all in Arizona.

Why I Chose Springfield as My Home: The friendly people, everyone waves, plus an awesome public school system plus a small southern town without the social issues of bigger cities equal the perfect place to raise a family.

 

Council Goals: To give back to a city that has given my family so much. I want to serve our community by being objective towards controlled growth, being supportive of our police, fire, and city depts. by challenging all public servants to give the best of themselves to our city & strive to give current & future residents the same quality of life that has been given to my family.

 

Professional: Vice President of Hotel Operations for Image Hotels.

 

Personal: Born in Sumter SC, graduated University of SC and Brewton Parker College, Married to Carole Durden Shealy for 27 years, and have three wonderful children: Rebecca, Meghan, & Ross

Jamey Stancell

 

Began Council Service: Year 2018

Years as Area Resident: 9 1/2

 

Why I Chose Springfield as My Home: Love the small town friendliness. I grew up in a small town and fell in love with Springfield, its architecture and the people.

 

 

Council Goals: To help Springfield grow in positive ways and to represent our town and always act in it's best interest for present and future.

 

 

Professional: To continue building custom cabinets, farm tables, etc. and to provide Springfield with competitive options for kitchen decor and lighting.

 

 

Personal Goal: To continue guiding my daughter to educational and career pathways.

Kenny Usher

Why I Chose Springfield as My Home: I was born and raised here. It’s a great place to raise a family.

 

Years as Area Resident: 42 Years

 

Employment status: Maintenance Technician at Georgia Pacific Savannah River Mill for 5 ½ years

 

Council Goals:

 

·       To manage growth in a way that will benefit our city in the future

·       To ensure cost effective, professional services are provided to the residents and businesses in our city

·       To work on developing and enhancing the qualities that makes our city unique through historic preservation measures and revitalization of our downtown area

 

Personal:

·       Married to Dianna Hunt Usher

·       3 Children – Luke, Gabrielle & Lauren

·       Member of St. Boniface Catholic Church

Gary Weitman

Previous City Council Service: 1977 - 1980 (4 years)

Why I Chose Springfield as My Home: I was raised here. I have always loved small towns. Springfield is an ideal place to raise a family.

 

Years as Area Resident: 60 Years

 

Employment status: Retired

 

Council Goals:

 

- To work together with other Council Members and the Mayor

- Try to get New Businesses into this area

- Try to lookout and help the citizens and the City of Springfield

 

Personal:

 

- Married to Dixie Weitman

- Have 2 children

- Lifelong member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
